Tongue & Lip Tie Care FAQs
What is tongue and lip tie treatment?
Tongue and lip tie treatment is a surgical procedure that detaches restrictive tissue that prevents proper movement of the tongue or lip. The restrictive tissue often inhibits eating and speech.
How do I know if my child is tongue tied or has a lip tie?
Early signs are trouble breastfeeding or eating. Other signs like speech problems show up around age 2 or 3. A clear sign is trouble moving their tongue or lip.
At what age is tongue and lip tie treatment best done?
The standard recommendation is to do the surgery to cut the frenulum before the child turns one. Younger infants don’t require sedation while toddlers would require it.
What method does Kids Dental Studio use in tongue and lip tie treatment?
We use lasers in a minor surgical procedure to snip the frenulum, allowing freer movement of tongue or lip.
What are the benefits of releasing a tongue tie or lip tie?
Your child will be able to move their tongue, jaw and lip better. Face muscles have less strain. They will be able to eat better, speak better, and have improved oral function.
Is the tongue and lip tie treatment painful or risky?
The procedure is relatively minor, often well tolerated, and generally carries low risk.
Do all tongue ties or lip ties need treatment?
No. We don’t recommend treatment if the tongue tie or lip tie is not causing functional issues.
What should parents expect after tongue and lip tie treatment?
You should expect follow-up exercises for the child which include stretching or massaging the tissue to prevent it from reattaching. We give parents post-operative instructions.
