Sedation dentistry for children are various medications and ways to help a child relax during a dental procedure. They remain conscious but can go through the treatment without anxiety.
What types of sedation are offered for children at Kids Dental Studio?
Tree types are offered. They include nitrous oxide or laughing gas, which is commonly used. We also use oral medications and an IV sedation.
How does oral sedation work for children?
With oral sedation, the child takes a pill about an hour before the procedure, usually while still at home. They are drowsy when they come in for their procedure. They can still walk and talk but feel relaxed.
Is my child fully asleep under sedation dentistry for children, or can they respond?
No, they aren’t full asleep and can respond. That is what we call conscious sedation. Some may drift in and out of their twilight sleep but they can still answer questions or follow instructions.
Are there side effects or risks involved in sedation dentistry for children?
There are few risks and side effects are minimal. Most children feel groggy or confused afterward and most have no memory of the procedure. They could have some nausea or a headache.
How do dentists decide which sedation option for children?
Our pediatric dentist looks at the child’s age, weight, anxiety level, medical history and the complexity of the dental procedure to offer a recommendation. They discuss it with the parents and ultimately it is the parent’s decision.
When is sedation dentistry for children especially helpful?
Sedation dentistry for children is helpful when a child is very anxious, has trouble sitting still, or requires complex, lengthy, or invasive procedures.
What can parents expect during a sedation dentistry appointment for children?
Parents will experience a calm, supportive environment with the dentist and staff answering all their questions. Your child’s vitals will be monitored while under sedation and you will be notified of the procedure outcome. Our office is warm and friendly to ease anxieties of both you and your child.
