Oral Sedation and Dentistry Asleep

Oral Sedation and Dentistry Asleep

Using Oral Sedation

Oral medications don't take more time to work compared to nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Dentists will give you a pill for your child to take about an hour before the procedure. The most common drug is triazolam but there are others we can discuss with you.

Few Side Effects

Oral sedation has few side effects, if any. Some children may experience grogginess and confusion. The most common side effect is a loss of memory where they remember nothing of the procedure.

Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation and dentistry asleep programs typically make children drowsy but they don't put them completely asleep. It is a twilight sleep where they can answer questions if needed. However, children may fall in and out of sleep during the procedure.

Oral sedation is a way to help a child relax throughout a dental procedure. We have several medications that can be used. Our dentists evaluate your child’s case, including age, fears, and medical history before recommending a specific oral sedation medication. Our dentistry asleep program offers many options for sedation.

With oral sedation, the child takes a pill about an hour before the procedure, usually while still at home. They are drowsy when they come in for their procedure. They can still walk and talk but feel relaxed.

No, they aren’t full asleep and can respond. That is what we call conscious sedation. Some may drift in and out of their twilight sleep but they can still answer questions or follow instructions.
Are there side effects or risks involved in sedation dentistry for children?
There are few risks and side effects are minimal. Most children feel groggy or confused afterward and most have no memory of the procedure. They could have some nausea or a headache.
How do dentists decide which sedation option for children?
Our pediatric dentist looks at the child’s age, weight, anxiety level, medical history and the complexity of the dental procedure to offer a recommendation. They discuss it with the parents and ultimately it is the parent’s decision.
