Space Maintainers for Children FAQs
What are space maintainers for children?
Space maintainers for children are small devices that fill the space when a baby tooth is lost too early. They allow the permanent tooth to grow correctly and prevent it from being crooked.
Why would my child need a space maintainer?
Children sometimes lose baby teeth before permanent teeth are ready to erupt. A space maintainer prevents nearby teeth from shifting into the gap.
What types of space maintainers are available?
We have four types of space maintainers. The unilateral space maintainers are used for single missing baby teeth. It works similar to a bridge. Crown and loop space maintainers use a dental crown over an existing tooth to support the space maintainer. Lingual space maintainers are used for multiple missing teeth and distal shoe space maintainers are inserted into the gum line to create enough space for an erupting tooth.
How is a space maintainer placed?
It’s a simple procedure. The dentist uses an existing nearby tooth, makes impressions, and fits the device in with the nearby tooth supporting it.
Are space maintainers removable?
Some space maintainers are fixed by being cemented in place, while others are removable.
How long will my child need to wear a space maintainer?
It depends. We monitor to see when the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. The space maintainers are worn until the adult tooth is ready to grow.
How should I care for my child’s space maintainer?
Regular brushing and flossing are essential to maintain oral hygiene. Clean removable space maintainers daily with mild soap and warm water. Your child will need to stop eating sticky or hard foods while wearing the device.
How do I know if my child needs a space maintainer?
Watch to see when your child loses baby teeth. Consult your pediatric dentist if you don’t see permanent teeth coming in or if your child is under 6 years old when they start losing baby teeth.
